I've got a 94 S10 Bzr 4.3L, as for my fuel filter, I can hear it very easily when I turn the ignition.

Now, when/if you change your fuel punp, check your tank, a common problem on these is... on the underside of the tank they put rubber strips over the straps. Dirt and debris gets in between the straps and tank, slowly eating away at the tank as it grinds. I recently changed my tank, pump, and sending unit. I only found that I had a slow gas leak, because my fuel pump died on me. This could have been a much bigger problem.
