This is just one of the many inconsistencies of the various Christian faiths. You are correct, we are not supposed to worship anyone other than God, yet many (not all) organised Christian churches cover the landscape in mini-Gods and graven images to which we are allowed to pray.
I have teased Catholics about this, who earnestly believe that the devine powers given to saints, the Virgin Mary, the Holy Ghost etc are really just stem from God himself, and that worshipping them is the same as worshipping God. Personally, I think thats nonsense. Many Christian franchises (churches) are polythiestic, that is they believe in many gods, just like the ancient Romans, Greeks and Egyptians.
