I am about to do the same thing with my 97 528i. I took my BMW to the dealer after it made some weird electrical problem symptoms. The dealer hooked it up to the computer and found nothing. They recharged the battery, and it has not shown me any sign of trouble. A friend recomended I replace the battery with a Diehard International ($100). I will do it today without any reservation.
