Exactly.
If your coolant freezes it expands, it a little cast iron block isnt going to stop it. Nothing does. So the "freeze plugs" are plugs in holes in the block that will relieve the pressure from the expansion if the colant should freeze. Still have to pull the motor to replace them in most cases, but it saves the block.
They dont usually just pop out on thier own though...
