Daytime Running Light Module

Sure glad I found this site!! My 1994 Caravan has been fairly reliable but I have been experiencing some of the electrical anomolies the seem to be quite common from what I've been reading here. Maybe someone can help solve this one. Through this site I've learned that the cause of high beams staying on at all times is likely the DRLM. After locating and unplugging it, BINGO...the lights went out. Unfortunately, the dash indicator, which had also been staying on continually, failed to light at all so I had no indicator telling me that my high beams were on. Figuring that the module was hooped anyway, I decided to take it apart. After digging out a mess of silicone like material I came to the printed circuit board. There's a small tab on the side of the wiring connector where it enters the module. Breaking that plastic tab off reveals a small transistor - which was fried. I removed the transistor and replaced the module. Now everything works (except, of course, the running lights) but I'm curious about that transistor. This $170 module (dealer cost) failed because of a 20 cent component. How can I identify what type of transistor to replace it with? It was cooked beyond recognition so there's nothing to go by there. Another question....does anyone have any cautionary advise on messing with electrical stuff like this?
