Speed Sensor failure

Are you referring to the VSS thats built into the speedometer assembly [in your dash] or the VSS on your autom. transmission? The one in your dash is an auxillary unit to the revolution sensor on the A/T. Assuming you have an A/T. 2WD or 4WD?
Anytime there is a repetitive failure, I would first check the electrical system. Work backwards from the VSS which in this case is the wiring harness [look for possible shorts, clean all connections, spray connections with contact cleaner, inspect and test all relays].
