The bearings will be fine - the oil pump is also turning when you crank the motor.
On new rebuilds, I prime the oil system by cranking the engine over (while the fuel pump is disconnected) until the Oil light goes out.
It sounds to me like you have no spark. If the plugs are wet, you should at least get a backfire (due to bad timing) while cranking it over. If the engine gets loaded with gas, a spark
at any time would flash off the vapors, sooner or later.
