All buttons light up (when headlights are on), but the balance/fader, the EQ, and the audio menu on the Multi-Info Display won't even turn on. I don't know if the problem is in the radio itself or in the MID.

-Both radio fuses +fuse next to wiring harness good.
-recognizes casette (little red light), but wont play (play button is on MID when working)
-cd changer accepts cd holder and cycles through cd's, but of course nothing can be played

A few ideas I had (seem unlikely)

-Several days before, I'd taken the radio just out of the dash (not unpluging anything) looking for pre-outs. Maybe the security had a problem with this, but it was several days before the radio's failure.
-Internal fuse (not next to wiring harness, but inside radio)?
-broken wire/short between radio and MID?

If you have any idea you think might help, please let me know.
Thanks!
I own a '86 735i and had a similar problem with the radio. The anti-theft kicked in for some reason and made the radio and the cassette player non-functional. Wonder if that happend when you removed the position of the system?
I resolved the situation by turning on my ignition to position 1 where all the dash lights come on and leaving it that way for one hour. This will allow you to reset your 'code' (I found my code # in my manual). Once that was done everything began functioning normally.

This is for an '86 model. I have no idea how it works on a '96 though.
