From the sounds of it, when you had the tire balanced, they put the counter weights only on the inside of the rim. It does make for a cleaner look not being able to see the little weights, but it does lead to uneven wear on soft tires like that. Obviously, if you had a bad alignment, you’d get the same thing. In either case, new tires wearing out in 5 months is not normal.

Go to tirerack.com and you can do some price checking for your tires. I buy the Cooper 5000SP Zs myself. They’re inexpensive at $150 at tire or so and have good traction (not the best) but have excellent wear.
