Well, the short answer is no.
The '48 should have the power assisted gearshift (whoopie!) but they were never automatics.
Now, there is an automatic that will fit the flathead 6 cylinder, but they're hard to find, and you'll need to get the brackets and all and the shifter out of like a 53 or 54 desoto/truck/dodge/chrysler/plymouth to do it.
These transmissions were two speed autos, and kind of crappy, too.
Now, throw a 340 and a 727 in it, or if you want a slow sled, a 225 /6 and a 904 in it and you'l have yourself a unique piece of nostalgia.
But the manual trans in the original '48 was a breeze to drive, and bulletproof. So's the flathead six. if it spins, it'll still run. Like a top!
