I think if you were grounding the wires, you would notice some missing under load. I believe those grommets are mainly to protect the wire insulation from being cut or abraded from the metal looms. New 8mm wires shouldn't be arcing to anything.
Those aluminum terminals inside distributor caps build up deposits pretty quickly from arcing.....I don't know if anybody sells caps with copper terminals anymore.
