? about MSD pro-billet dist.

I was told that i should change the distributor gear to a bronze gear instead of using the billet gear that's on the distributor. Because the billet one will chew up the camshaft gear in time, if i change to the bronze gear then it won't chew up the cam gear. is this just a myth or does this really happen? I was told by a fairly reputable mechanic but he also told me this information based on what he's researched about high performance chevy motors. Could this just be a chevy problem or for ford too? I don't really want to spend 40 bucks on a new distributor gear but if it'll save the camshaft gear then ok.
