there is an idle air adjustment screw on the idle air control valve which is located above the valve cover plate. to test if it is inop. Unplug the electrical connector on the left end. if the idle goes up it is working fine. reattach the connection and with a flat head screw driver turn the adjustment screw in turning clockwise instantly you will start to hear the engine idle down. Idle it down to 700-900 rpm level. keep an eye on you tach on the dash to get it in range. that will solve your problem. DO NOT clamp off any hoses if you do the pressue will build you in your engine and blow the gasket.
