best bet it probably to get a gm crate engine. i'm guessing the mechanic who did the repairs used a buffer to remove the old gasket and didn't cover the lifter valley or ports so the gasket residue screwed up some bearings and pistons. it really pisses me off when a tech is careless enough to let this happen. if you're looking for a cheaper solution you could get a used engine from an auto recycler i've had good luck going this route. just make sure you get a decent warranty with the engine you swap in. good luck
