The noise your hearing is most likely an internal bearing called - input shaft bearing. Input shaft bearing go bad from incorrect DOWNSHIFTS. If the bearing is bad, I'll bet 2nd gear/synchro is chewed up. If I were you I'd start looking for a good used or rebuilt trans. Your '92 trans probably has high miles & not worth rebuilding.

The noise from shifter is normal just the fork & synchros moving, shafts.
