Question Question on 1996 Grand Am

ok Here's what I know. My car blew ahead gasket, the when i opened the oil resevoir it looked like hot chocolate, and dip stick was smoking. The thing that is baffling me is the coolant was almost empty and I had just added to it a few hours before hand. One minute the car was fine, I made a stop came back out and it was knocking a good bit, which was when I discovered all the issues under the hood. I didnt have the money for a tow on me so I had to drive it the 5 miles or so home. Myquestion is a few people have told me that just having the head redone is risky becuase it may have dried out the bearings in the crankshaft or something like that. So should I just have the engine swapped out? Is it worth having the engine swapped or fixed? The cars in great shape, minus the recent engine issues. Any help is appreciated.
