Transmission

Check the level and condition of the transmission fluid. If the level is low (leaks) then air mixes with the fluid and causes a delayed shift. The fluid should be red not brown or orange, if it is not a healthy red or pink then get the trans. serviced (transmission oil changed and the filter replaced). If this still doesn't fix it then you probably have worn clutches and or bands inside the transmission indicating a far more serious repair/rebuild. The transmission controller can tell when things start to go wrong and will put the trans. into "limp in" mode which only gives you 2nd gear untill the car is shut off and the controller reboots at the next startup at which time it again checks to see if everything is OK or not.
