do not be intimidated by engine cleaning. spray a gentle degreaser (simple green diluted 50/50) on a warm (not hot engine) and allow to dwell for 5 min or so. lightly mist engine occasionally to keep from drying. (unless it is an older vehicle you will not need to cover any electronics (cover open intakes though) just do not spray them directly with high pressure.) agitate with a scrub brush and then rinse. run engine for 5 minutes to dry then apply a WATER BASED dressing to all rubber and plastic with a soft towel (cotton or microfiber). you can also use a steam cleaner but I would not go buy one if just for this.
