A heavily modified Humvee engineered by a team from Carnegie Mellon University "became the first entry to dodge bricks, metal rods and other obstacles and finish a qualifying run for Saturday's $1 million race across the Mojave Desert."
The "Grand Challenge" desert race is sponsored by the Pentagon as part of their efforts to develop practical unmanned, self-controlled ground vehicles. The Defense Department wants to "have one-third of all ground vehicles unmanned by 2015."
