Yes you can do this.. I don't know about damaging the ABS or not.. (Have done it this way several times before on my other Cavs with no ill effects) but I would sugest loosening the bleeder valve a little bit to allow fluid to escape while doing this.. You need to bleed your brakes afterwards.. but then again that should be done any how..
Just be sure not to push the piston back any farther then being flush with the caliper.. (not sure if it's possible to push it 'too far' back)..
