There is a flat connector behind your battery which plugs into the firewall. If you unplug it you will likely find one pin which overheated just as mine did and doesn't make a good connection. I don't know the cause but if you don't want to clean it you can wiggle the wires with your lights turned on and when they start working you should be able to start your van.
