Power doesn't limit the use of a gearbox, torque does.
Xtrac, Hewland and several manufacturers of high performance gearboxes have transverse gearboxes for FWD cars, or gearsets for stock transmissions. Transverse 4WD gearboxes can also be used with some modifications, most of those are however quite expensive (usually between $10,000-70,000).
Transverse FWD gearboxes can't be made as strong as other type of gearboxes since there are quite tight space limitations.
