Global Economy
GM, like other big corporations, is fighting for survival like everyone else. Some say that in 10 years there will only be 5 car companies left. GM, Ford, Daimler Chrysler, Honda, and Toyota. All other smaller car companies are expected by some to have either went out of business all together or have been absorbed within the corporate structure of one of the big five. Whether this is the case or not remains to be seen. Nevertheless, many of the smaller players are coming more and more under the wings of the big boys. GM has seen the writing on the wall and has joined in the merger mania. A short list of GM affiliations and/or major stakes in is Saab(04 Malibu/Saab 9.3), Opel, Suzuki(Tracker/Vitara), Daewoo(Suzuki Verona), Isuzu, General Motors Egypt, Fiat, Toyota(Matrix/Vibe), Honda(same Honda 3.5 V6 in Honda Pilot and 04 Saturn Vue-the result of a trade made between GM and Honda), Avto Vaz-Russia, Subaru, Vauxhall, Holden, et al. General Motors is becoming a world class car company in the process. In the American tradition GM is taking the best from each company from around the world it comes into contact with and absorbing it into its own engineering. It has taken Toyota's processes it has learned in its joint ventures (Prism and now Vibe) and will do Toyota one better. GM will survive. Long live Chevrolet.
