I have a '94 4x4, and have replaced the muffler and tailpipe two times in 172k miles. The rest of the pipes are still good. I would not remove the converter (you'll feel better knowing that the Feds won't take a financial interest in you). You can get a bolt on pipe that goes from the converter to the muffler and then get your specialty muffler to fit that pipe and the tailpipe. I put a Thrush turbo on it the first time and it was OK, but the second time I put a "cherry bomb" style (straight thru, glass pack) and it has mellowed out very well. Just enough rumble for me.
