Sounds like the final audio output transistors are defective, and are overheating very quickly. You could have the radio repaired, but it'd probably be better to simply replace it with a new one - especially if you'd like to add a CD/MP3 player to the car.

Since a short in the speaker wiring may have caused the problem, it'd be a good idea to check that as well, to avoid damaging the new radio.
