Since today was Sunday, I couldn't ask anybody at shops, so I went out with the bright afternoon sun on it and could finally see the retaining clips that snap into grooves on four tapered pins mounted on the steering wheel. They're hard to see and get to. The factory manuals were no help at all here....one of the few times they didn't have the procedure well documented. Maybe I missed something somewhere.
I took pictures of the details. If anyone else needs help with this, just email me.
