It's there because most people think maintenance is not needed. Proper maintenance is key* There is no reason to skip/late the timing belt replacement, for your own sake replace the water pump. The light comes on about every 7500 miles

Customer brings in a car for t/belt replacement & declines w/pump. 3 months later the water pump goes & all that shit needs to be taken apart again & replaced, including a new timing belt. You just paid, what, 2 times the parts & 10 hrs of labor - not good.
