FWD cars don't have better traction. They are known to handle a little better in snow, but that is generally because they have less power, and also because they have a bit more weight on the front tires when trying to get going in the snow.
As far as racing and performance goes RWD cars get much better traction, because they transfer their weight to the rear when they launch. A front wheel drive car will pull the weight off it's front wheels, thus allowing them to spin pretty easily.
