if you're wanting to do it yourself find a mechanic that will look over the car before working on it. I know I sound sort of like an asshole, but get the free inspection to find out what's wrong with it, then tell the mechanic that you're going to go shop around for prices then go fix it. It's frugal, yeah.. whatever. Take what you can. Nice guys finish last.
