Welcome into the world of modeling.
You can work in the garage, inside, doesn't matter really as long as you ventilate the space you working in. Revell for example has different 'skill levels' from 1 (snap kit, few pieces) to level 5 (over 150 pieces).
You can take a look in a local hobbyshop and see what they have. I'm sure they'll give a quick tour if you want to.
I'll buy my stuff online, HobbyLinkJapan.
There are many different (brand) types of glue, cements etc etc. I use Tamiya stuff.
