S-10 Blazer Starter 'Clicks'

I have a 1991 S-10 Blazer with the 4.3L TBI engine with 134,000 mi and the starter(I assume it's the starter) makes a fast repetetive clicking sound when I start it. This only occurs when I have the key pressed all the way forward; once the engine catches and I let go, the clicking ceases and it runs fine.

The reasons I don't go ahead and have the starter replaced are
1)the engine still seems to turn over fine

2)the noise has not been constant, sometimes I'll start it and it'll be fine, other times it makes the strange clicking sound.

3) The starter was replaced around 110,000 mi, so I would expect it to still be good....

Might there just be some crud on the bendix, preventing it from engaging fully, or am I dreaming?

Or could something like this be caused by a stripped or worn flywheel?

any ideas?
