I would imagine that between the two mechanics, one of them was bright enough to check the cooling fan before charging you what was probably 400 bucks to change the computer. You could always go with an aftermarket control. this one
www.dccontrol.com is probably overkill for your application, but it's easy to install and going this route will provide a quick solution.
