your EGR valve could have been defective... or bad already, its rare but possible, or you could check one more possibility...

Take some starting fluid and spray little bursts of it around the intake manifold, like where it meets the head and by the trottle boddy, if the engine revs up at all when you did this you have a air leak in the manifold or its not tight to the head, also check all your vacuume hoses for cracks and broken hoses, that could make it very possible for the engine to idle differently... hope that helps, i'm sure someone will be along soon and will be able to give you a better solution but thats all i can think of right now! good luck
