If rod/stroke meant more power, wouldn't all the fast people (jotech, laskey, etc) all be using B16's? And if vtec was a waste, wouldn't they all be using ported LS heads? I'm 100% sure that you're loosing power by setting the vtec activation point high up in the powerband, the vtec cams on hondas don't have much overlap to begin with, and activating at 5000 it's not like it's going to slow down turbo response anyway.
Maybe not perfect but better than the B18x motors which is my understanding. And I totally agree the an B18B is a good motor for steet/daily driven cars. There are plenty of pro drags using B16s, and alot of that is like you said torque but also displacment. I dont think vtec heads are a waste, just not neccesary for like you say street driven cars. AS for my car, I set it high enough for it not to even engage. I do my tuning myself via wideband o2 and egt, and Ive gotten it down pretty good. I find it easier to tune without vtec engagement leaning out the mixture, and if you played with the apexi things you would see that they are not the most consistent things. My power curve doesnt fall until about 7600 when the boost starts to drop off. I guess I missed the whole point of this post. For a efficient daily driven street car, the b18b is probably your best bet.
