The long gearing tranny will lose because our tiny engines only make power up top. The longer gearing makes you drop out of the power band (also out of vtec sometimes).

Wouldn't you say that you can "hold a gear" longer if you're waiting for 8300 rpm instead of 6800 rpm? It is possible to rev it that high on a stock bottom, I just wouldn't do it.

You don't have to buy a complete engine. You're looking at $300 for an LS block and $300 for a VTEC head. Don't forget shipping. Then while the engine is being built, I would take it apart, I would build up the block so I could rev it to at least 8500 rpm. I'd estimate about $1000 to rebuild/upgrade/blueprint/balance the bottom end.
