There are almost 70% of diesels sold every year in Europe... I don't really like, I prefer the classic engines, but I must conceed that the last diesels common rails, etc. are very good with good performances. Even Jaguar starts to sell diesel on his X and S Type.
There are 7, A8, S, diesels...
And diesel is less taxed than gas here : for one liter : 1€ for the Super 95 and 0,75 for the diesel ! even if it's more expensive to buy a diesel than a gas car.
No need to say that diesels sold very well on the second hand market !
Though, Non-diesel cars sold less good so are less expensive on this market !!
