I know a winch looks expensive, but having control of the line inside your truck, while you're maneuvering out of the situation is awful nice. There were a couple of times that I needed to be in the truck AND controlling the winch together to get out of some tight spots.
If I bought a come-a-long (and I still might) it would be to lock down (in an arcing motion)the rear of my truck to keep from sliding downhill or something while winching up front.
