The auto hubs are a no-brainer, they lock when you put it in 4Hi or 4Lo. When you go back to 2Hi, they stay locked but don't get any power from the engine, they're just extra drag to push around and eat a tiny bit of gas mileage, but it's not a problem for them to stay locked otherwise. To unlock them, you just back up a few feet any time after shifting to 2Hi. However, if you're on a road that frequently changes from bare pavement to mud/snow/ice and back again then you can leave the hubs locked the entire time and just shift the lever as conditions dictate. As long as the hubs stay locked, you don't have to be below 25 MPH to shift to 4Hi, you can do it at any speed, just be DARN sure you haven't backed up since you were last in 4Hi or you'll be in for a racket and possible damage if you shift at 40 or something.
