Those air-cooled flat-4 engines are simple and easy to work on and soup up.
this is precisely why i have a bug sitting in the garage next to my 88 hatch, of course, i promised myself not to touch it until my hatch is finished. cept mine isnt gonna be strictly a drag car, its gonna be a baja bug
