As for the purpose of drifting... it's really just a fun way to take corners at speed with a RWD vehicle. It's sorta like getting your lean-on in a s-turn on a motorcycle... sure, you could do it upright, but it's faster and more fun to lean it over. Drifting is a rush when your wheels are screaming and it almost feels like you're gonna lose the line and then all of a sudden you grab and your traction rips you through the rest of the turn.
