If there is no afterlife, then death is
really scary. What comes after it? What happens to your mind?!? I can't imagine not being conscious, not existing. Hurts my brain trying to imagine it.
Notions such as Heaven and Hell are contrived to give people a goal and to allay their fears about death. Nonsense I tell ya--it'd be nice if it was true.
Btw, I think the Pope recently announced that Heaven and Hell aren't concrete places. They are what you make it and it more psychological. So no clouds and harps, which would suck and be
my personal (and most like others') hell.
