Your tach (short for "tachometer") is the gauge that displays your rpms.. you should check (i.e. look at) that. I know that the wording was a little confusing. If your car doesn't have a tach, does it sound like the engine is revving higher than usual prior to your shift points (sounds like you drive an automatic-transmissioned car)?

So far, I'm with DVS, it sounds like it's your torque converter (or your clutch if you drive a manual?).
