I was in exactly the same boat as you were... I drive two different cars, so it's hard for me to intuitively "know" when to change gears... I found myself hitting the revlimiter in the R33 now and again, and it annoyed me...
Like you, I didn't want a big ass tacho, but I *did* like the look of the shift light that comes with them...

www.takakaira.com, there is a Pivot Shift light that is about 0.8" diameter, filled with a BIG FAT RED LED, which is pretty much the same as those Autometer ones... but it's only like an inch long, and you don't need to have a big ass tacho or swap pills on it...

Then on the drop down combo box at the top, select "Racing Timing Lamp"...
I've ordered it, and it's on it's way to me as we speak via UPS, so I can't give you a report on how good it is, but it's Pivot... an extortionally expensive Jap brand, so it must be good
