In terms of cleaning them, I've just sprayed them with electrical cleaner - though you'll want the stuff which doesn't leave a residue, otherwise you'll make new problems.
And I'd have to say, Razor, I've found they don't just work or not work. Mine was just a little bit off, and when I got it opened up and everything cleanedup/re-soldered, the car went heaps better.
Even though the guy who did it didn't believe it would make a difference; but then we've encountered lack of belief from most experts when looking at Andy's car, and we always turned out to be right
