My 96 Cap 4.3 V-8 went down a whole quart of oil in about 1000 miles, no smoke, noises or leaks anywhere. 2nd time this happened. Any idea what might cause this? Mileage is 81000. Thx.

That's normal oil consumption on my 89 mustang 5.0 with 100k :disappoin

My 89 caprice with 101k only burns a half quart in 3000 miles.

Not sure what is normal on the 4.3's

A faulty PCV. valve can cause higher oil consumption. Oil sending unit could be seeping. Is any oil going out the exhaust? What brand of oil are you using? Some oils will go thru an engine faster than others..

Nothing coming out of exhaust, no smoke or oil residue at all, just seems like normal exhaust. Where is the oil sending unit located on the engine? I doubt it's the sending unit though, since it basically lost an entire quart of oil (whole bottle) in 1000 miles, if that much came out of the sending unit it would prob. be all over the floor! I do reg. oil changes at local mechanic every 3000 miles, not sure what brand of oil. Would the PCV cause any other issues? I'm wondering now if it is related to the surging-when-warmed-up issues mentioned in a previous post.

How do the spark plugs look?
