82 ram van ignition lock problem

I have an 82 Dodge Ram 150 custom van and it runs great but when I turn it off an the stearing wheel locks I have problems unlocking it to switch over an turn on. It took me over 40 minutes last time just to unlock and start it. Or at least I think thats what it is. Does anyone have any ideas?

Does it seem like the key/cylinder is having a hard time turning, or does the steering wheel locking mechanism seem to be the culprit?

I think its the steering wheel locking mechanism bucause once i get it to turn the van has no problem continuing to turn to start. It was fine a few weeks ago then got worse to where i have given up.

Then unfortunately you're stuck taking apart the steering column in order to look for worn, broken, or bent parts that could be causing the difficulty with disengaging the steering wheel locking mechanism.
