Light Weight Flywheels????

Alright..... I have a 97 prelude and I'm looking into flywheels. I hear a lot of mixed opinions like "go as light as possible, period" then i hear "dont go too light." Then i hear the ones that weigh about 8 lbs are more for road racing and the 12lb ones are more for drag. Does anyone actually know from experience? So which one would work best on my H22?

ive heard superlight flywheels can cause drivebility problems in stop and go traffic since they dont have as much inertia you lose revs faster (?)

I dont think they make a damn bit of difference unless your rinning a turbo. Its suposed to help it spool up faster. I had one in my 94 civic, and everyone said it wont run right. It ran fine but didn't make much of an improvement.

I use a 9lb flywheel and it revs fast with the lost inertia up big hills means 2nd gear but i love the speed it revs now lot more pick up

Lightweight flywheel = more HP
heavyweight fly = more TQ
my friend put a heavier fly on his truck just a short while ago, i was sorta confused because I am used to hearing everyone put lighter one on their cars... but then i thought about it and it makes sense... yeah... i guess all that crap he has done is how he is making 500lbft and only 200hp lol.

You are correct it does lose Rev's faster. But it is soo worth it. The car buzzes up so much faster. When you drag race having a really light flywheel is not a problem as long as you speed shift when you do shift that way your RPM's do not have time to drop. I have a ACT 8lb flywheel and a ACT 6-puck with heavy duty pressure plate and I love it and the whole setup is very streetable.

If i had a turbo crvtec would a lightweight flywheel really mean no higher than 2nd gear on hills, or is that engine gonna have enough power to overcome the lost inertia?
and I am confused, If you are going up a hill, wouldnt the engine have to work less to turn itself with a light fly, and be able to accelerate uphills better? I thought the heavy flywheel was so on the freeway it kept you going better and you have to use less throttle to stay at 70 and get better mileage.

Probbly you can go higher with a turbo CRVTEC but i just meant for my car with its 1.5

Unless you're racing, light flywheels aren't really recommended. The worst thing you can have is light flywheel, and you live in an area where you have to climb up and down. What does this mean, then? Simple: iwthout the needed torque, you're in trouble going uphill. In fact, it will be a big chore trying to go uphill with a light flywheel. Here's our talk on light flywheels: http://www.hondaclub.com.ph/forum/index.php?board=7;action=display;threadid=547;star t=0

so will lightweight flywheels actually make you lose torque or just shift it to a higher RPM?

no!!!! flywheels dont add hp or torque or take it away. they dont made the motor rev down slower either i have one i know, they actually just increas throttle response and the spinn down quicket because the have less inertia. but you ar right the do make stop and go driving shity

A flywheel is just about the best transfer of power you'll every see, meaning it transfers just about 100% of the energy put into it.
A lighter flywheel will NOT make you go faster. It will make your engine rev quicker while not in gear, sometimes allowing quicker shifts, sometimes making you bog because your engine isn't revving fast enough.
Tradeoff. Unless you're an excellent shifter who's actually racing, it's just another useless moneymaker for the aftermarket.

whoever posted this originally had it backwards, lightweight flywheels are for drag (8lb or so) and the 11lb wheels are for road racing. its all about the inertia, when youre doing road racing youre going to be doing a lot more shifting at high speeds so the flywheel is carrying more inertia and the engine is working less. 8lb flywheels are made for quick acceleration in lower gears where the inertia isnt needed to maintain speed since there is none yet. and they dont increase hp or torque, thats true as well. but they DO help you move along quicker as the engine is working less to produce the same speed/acceleration. its undyno-ed results, and its been proven...otherwise why would so many people use them. and i dont just mean random people looking to make their cars faster, i mean actual racers.
and as for personal experience, the mods on my car are minor and i didnt do track before and after so i cant say if the flywheel did anything for time, but it definitely revs and falls faster in neutral, which would kind of hint that it does the same thing if its in gear...just not to the degree that it does in neutral. think about it.
