what is the normal operating temp for an 1500hd on the trans not towing.

I have the same truck, except mine's an '02. When it's fairly warm in the summer time it will run about 170-185 on the highway at 70 mph. During our cold N. Dakota winters it will barely crack 130. When pulling our goose neck stock trailer in tow haul mode it will run 200-220....

anything above 190 deg f you should have an external cooler...
use the new GM dexron VI this is synthetic and synthetics run cooler, better heat tranfer ..
