Mechanic suggested tie rod end replacement?

Ok so mechanic looked at my car, well the steering was moving side to side when I would turn the steering wheel, this is while the car is stopped.
So he went under the hood and told me to turn the steering while he checks and said I need to replace both my tie end rods inner and outer on both sides.
Here is my question to you folks.
I went to rock auto to order mine but noticed it does not specify if its for left side or right side. So to make sure I am asking you guys would it matter for either side? Or is it same for both sides and I should order 2 of inner and 2 of outer?

There are 4 brand in the online site which is good I will put them lower to higher price.

I don't want to spend too much if it wouldnt matter as much.

With tie rods, you have inner and outer.
If the threaded sleeve that connects them is severely rusted, you may need to replace that also.

As far as brand, Moog would be my first choice, good stuff..

You didnt answer one question....Tie rod ends inner and outer are the same on either side correct? There is no passenger side inner tie rod end? You can buy a inner tie rod end and replace either side correct?

the inner and outer tie rods should be moog brand ..these I get with a lifetime warrantee...also the idler arm should be replaced now if old.....I doubt you need all 4 ties rods but if YOU do not grease these every 3,ooo-4000mi then this is very possible ....use only lithium grease EP2..........

normally you lift vehicle off the ground to check all the front end componets ,,,this guy sounds like he's a hack....bring to another repair shop that has a good reputation and have them show you whats up ...the joints must be secure and not loose...also ball joints need to be checked ..

when these componets are replaced then you need to have the alignment corrected so therefore you replace all that is worn ...with frequent greasing you should be good for a few years ..if you don't grease these parts in one winter they will get rusted out..........

Chances are that the center link and idler arm are shot also.
Checking front end with the wheels on the ground is a quick and not so dirty way of checking for looseness.
Will not see ball joint wear with this method.

Like jcat said, have it done right before you proceed..
