Sand Paper?

I see all these replies and advice about sanding and all that, but im just wondering what type of sand paper to use? And yes theres more than one.
I found some stuff around my house that looked about right. But then i tried it on some rough handpainted stuff on the interior if my car, and it all scratched off straightaway. Or i can use the stuff in my dads garage for sandging wood and all that. But that stuff looks really rough and would totally ruin a car model.

hey Oz:wave:, well you can use any type of sand paper it just depends on what grit to use. as for me i use a few different brands but i use K&S FLEX-I-GRIT assorted sanding films the most, they come with 150, 280, 320, 400, and 600 grit. though i dont really use anything rougher than the 280 grit.

I dont think that the type of sandpaper matters as much as the grit. When I first got back in to the hobby i used whatever i found around the house like you are. Then i was lucky enough to get to a hobby shop and discoverd Tamiya's finishing sandpaper. it comes in varouis grits, depending on what you want to buy from like 300 to 2000. They have worked great for me so far. But hey dont be afraid to try any kind you can get your hands on, as the best modelers are the inovative ones.:)

Ozstrider - most hobby stores carry Tamiya sandpaper, but be warned it is a tad expensive. However, go to one of the car stores like 'Repco' or 'Supercheapauto' (yep I'm from Melbourne too :D) - they carry sandpaper upto 2000grit...much cheaper too!!

Any sandpaper should work (unless you plan to wetsand) it just matters what grit you use. You can buy autobody sandpaper at just about any automotive parts store (I don't know about Austraila though) and as far as what grit to go with, I suggest truing all kinds until you find what works best for the kind of modeling you do. On some of my crazier projects I use 80 grit to get the basic shape I want, then I sand that down with something milder before applying putty.
